Common TMD Questions
How do I know if I have TMD?
The symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ disorders, or TMD) can vary significantly from one person to the next. Some of the more common symptoms include:
- Pain and soreness of the jaw and facial muscles
- Tooth grinding, also called bruxism
- Clicking and popping of the jaw
- Excess tooth wear and damage
- Headaches and migraines
- Neck pain
- Ringing in the ears
- Loss of range of motion of the jaw
How does TMD cause all these symptoms?
The jaw joint is a delicately balanced mechanism. Although the joint itself is small, it is essential to many interrelated functions such as speaking, eating, and facial expressions. It is also interconnected with the musculoskeletal function as a whole. As such, a malfunction of your jaw joint can cause problems such as aches and pains in other areas of your body as well.
What treatments are available?
Every patient is different, and Dr. Castellini treats each patient according to his or her direct needs. In TMD cases, the appropriate treatment for the condition might consist of several different procedures, from correcting the size and shape of the teeth with porcelain crowns or dental bonding, to prescribing a custom designed neuromuscular orthotic device.
Is treatment effective?
Yes. As an experienced and credentialed neuromuscular dentist, Dr. Castellini uses only the most effective diagnostic tools and treatment techniques available for TMJ related disorders. After carefully evaluating and assessing your condition, she will prescribe a custom treatment plan to realign your jaw and reverse both the symptoms of TMJ disorders, and the condition itself.
What if I leave it untreated?
TMD does not go away on its own. As your system tries to accommodate the problems associated with it, it can actually become worse.
In the vast majority of cases, TMD, if left untreated, will continue to progress, causing pain, tooth damage, and loss of both bone and teeth.
