Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that involves the treatment of the inner part, or pulp, of the teeth. Endodontic therapy, or treatment, is a procedure more commonly known as a root canal.

The pulp of the tooth consists of nerves, veins and arteries, and soft tissue. Usually protected by the hard outer portion of the tooth, damage to the tooth pulp can cause extreme pain when exposed to decay or infection. This most frequently occurs as a result of an untreated cavity in the enamel of the teeth, which then spreads to the inner portion of the tooth.

The best endodontic treatment, of course, is careful prevention. By maintaining regular dental visits and promptly treating any tooth decay as it arises, it is possible to avoid damage to the tooth pulp in many cases.

When the tooth pulp does begin to suffer decay, endodontic therapy (root canal) is an excellent option that allows many patients to keep their natural teeth rather than require tooth replacement such as dental implants.

Endodontic therapy (root canal)

The root canal procedure clears away decay from the outer portion of the tooth, as well as the inner, pulp portion. This procedure, done under local anesthesia, involves gently clearing away the decayed and damaged tooth pulp.

Once the tooth is fully cleared of decayed material and the canals are shaped, the area will be carefully sealed and repaired. Depending on the type and severity of damage to the upper portion of your tooth, this may consist of a porcelain filling or a porcelain crown to complete the restoration of your tooth.

This procedure can prevent loss of even severely damaged teeth. You can keep your smile, end your pain, and get back your healthy, beautiful smile.
