Neuromuscular Dentistry
in Orlando, Florida
What is neuromuscular dentistry, and how does it differ from traditional general dentistry?
Neuromuscular Dentistry (NMD) is the technology that helps align the upper and lower teeth by relaxing the muscles. It expands upon the traditional mechanical approach to dentistry.
To understand it, you must know something about your bite. Your bite (occlusion) is the way your upper and lower teeth fit together.
General dentistry addresses teeth and gums. A neuromuscular dentist does this too, but in the context of the entire face, neck and shoulder area. The jaw joint has its muscles, blood vessels and nerves, which are all part of a neuromuscular dentistry focus. When the jaw joint is misaligned, your upper and lower teeth meet incorrectly. This is known as malocclusion, or a bad bite. More formally, it is known as Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD), and has many painful symptoms.
Head, neck, and shoulder pain
Many of our patients come to us having suffered from headaches and neck and shoulder pain for months or years. Some have relied on drug treatments for relief, and many have endured countless tests and doctor visits trying to find the root cause of their problems, to no avail.
That's why neuromuscular dentistry is such an important aspect of our practice. These chronically painful conditions can be caused by a poor bite (occlusion/jaw misalignment).
Why see a neuromuscular dentist
TMD is a common condition, but it requires an expert to properly diagnose and treat it. Jaw alignment is delicate and precise, and misalignment can be difficult to spot using traditional observation methods.
We have invested in the most modern and sophisticated diagnostic equipment so that we can treat TMD effectively. To treat TMD, the jaw joint must be tested, and its sounds, muscle activity, and muscle movements recorded and analyzed. This gives us the data on which to base your treatment plan. We’re proud to say that our TMD patients have received the most attentive and well-thought-out treatments which have corrected the bite and typically relieved them of painful TMD symptoms – all without any medication.
