Dental Crowns: Your Questions Answered

Posted .

What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a tooth to protect it and to restore its strength, shape, and size. The dental crown will cover the entire visible part of the tooth once it is placed.

Do I need a dental crown?
There are several reasons why Dr. R. Castellini may recommend a dental crown in Orlando, Florida. You may benefit from a dental crown if your tooth is:

– Broken
– Worn down
– Cracked or chipped
– Weakened
– Missing and a dental bridge has been recommended
– Missing and a dental implant has been recommended
– Compromised because of a large dental filling or several fillings
– In need of root canal therapy
– Severely misshaped or discolored

How is the tooth prepared for a crown?
If root canal therapy was performed, there may not be very much tooth structure left. This being the case, our dentist can build up a foundation to support the dental crown. Otherwise, the tooth enamel may need to be shaped to allow room for the dental crown in your smile. After the tooth is prepared, impressions of the tooth and the surrounding teeth will be made so that your crown can be designed and constructed specifically for your smile.

How is a dental crown placed?
When your dental crown is complete, our dentist will examine the fit and color. After any adjustments are made, a special cement will be used to permanently attach the dental crown to your tooth.
